I'm going to tack this onto the end of the Bracken Anthology as a parting shot. Feel free to copy it anywhere that it might find a receptive audience. (The same goes for all of the essays and short stories on the anthology; they are also found linked on my website.)

I’m a geezer, so I prep on dry land and have an 18’ Buccaneer for the 100 acre lake I live next to.

I used to have a Morgan 35 for a number of years, and took the kids cruising for a week or 10 days at a time in the Maine islands. But that got too expensive, so I traded it in for a 26-footer with a swing keel that let me get into shallow water. But that got too expensive, so I sold it and abandoned the sailing cruises for picnics in a small powerboat. But that got too expensive . . . .

So it goes.

I’m not sure if I’d recommend the sail cruising life unless you’ve grown up with it. Emergencies happen very suddenly, sometimes—squalls, thunderstorms, reefs, fog, and so on—and you need to know what to do, sometimes without time to think about it.

We’re in the process of selling our house, putting a few things in long term storage, and, buying a 38+/- foot boat.

We’re going to live on the boat until I retire in a few years, learn as much as we can about sailing that boat off the coast here, and then when it’s time, shove off and sail off into the sunrise.

First we have to sell the house.

Just finished FEAT! It was great and I hated for it to end!

Hope Obama can end his career with a permanent vacay at a 2 acre Camp David concertina compound.

Left a review at Amazon!

I started with a Daysailer back in ‘07 and learned to get her moving. I sold her though after two years of almost no trips. I would love to follow the advice of this piece and live free at sea but it requires dedication to the cause. It is not possible on a middle class paycheck to prep and acquire the means of escape. Alas I will be here on dry land holding off the jackboots while the younger stronger freedom lovers steal away. God speed.

I finally have read “Enemies Foreign and Domestic”.

You are a very talented writer, and the story gave me a lot to ponder.

I also read the excerpts from the other two books.

Rarely have I encountered characters in literature that cared about as deeply as those in your books.

May you always have a fair wind and following seas, MB.
