The oft repeated refrain that our elders died young because of bad medicine isn't necessarily true. The bad average lifetimes were due to astoundingly high infant and early childhood mortality rates and accidents. John Adams lived to a ripe old age. George Washington probably would have if he'd taken bed rest and chicken soup for a few more days rather than calling in the doctors who bled him to death.
