“... Ghostery says you have 17 trackers ...”

You seem knowledgeable about trackers - can trackers track any website they choose, or do they need invitation or permission to track the web site? (Many sites have a dozen or so tracking organizations; FreeRepublic just 1.) Also, do the trackers pay the websites they track? Thanks for the answer if you have the time.

I’m not a tracking expert. But I do not want to be tracked and wish there was a law against it. Ghostery provides a list of trackers associated with a web site and I use it to turn off the trackers.

It is my understanding that the tracking companies pay the web site for letting the visitors to the site be tracked.

You’re right about FR having just one tracker. That’s Google Analytics. They grab non-identifiable info about your visit and produce statistical reports for web site owners about the visitors to their site. Google Analytics is the only tracker I’ve not turned off in Ghostery because the info collected is harmless.

And, FWIW, I’ve not heard back from Rusty about the trackers on his site.
