A Pennsylvania woman set out with a video camera to learn what college students in her state know about the Holocaust and discovered an incredible lack of knowledge not only of the genocide of the Jews, but of basic facts about U.S. history and World War II.
Rhonda Fink-Whitman visited college campuses in Pennsylvania this fall, including the venerated Ivy League institution the University of Pennsylvania, where she was repeatedly faced with a remarkable ignorance about events that took place in the last century.
Students didnt know where Normandy was, why U.S. forces landed there, why the U.S. even entered the war or who was president at the time. (Wilson, Eisenhower and JFK were among the guesses.) One student didnt know who Anne Frank was, because he said he never read the book.

somehow things like that never make it to the history books
Amazing, isn’t it?
That photo remains today etched in my mind, along with others, for as an adult I investigated the Holocaust on my own.
When you go into the History, when Eisenhower made the Nazi leaders and the Polish Elites tour the camps after the war ended.....and had many of them bury the dead.. It leaves a profound affect on your heart and mind.
I will not forget that research....nor all learned...for days I investigated everything I could find. More than on occasion overwhelmed and in tears.
Having given women the right to vote from the start would not have deprived them of special status—it would have given them equal rights.
Jeesh!
<....”The horrors of Communism are right alongside the horrors of NAZIsm”....>
Oh Absolutely! In fact Stalin murdered and maimed about twice to three times the people....including his own officers and those close to him..family members as well. Stalin was one horrid and fully evil individual!
But our youth haven’t a clue HOW these men came to power...how willingly deceived the people were. I would go so far as to say our youth are on the fast track for the same deception when it comes. They have no defense to ward it off!
ALL most students know about Communism is that there was a “red scare hysteria” in the 1950s.
Meanwhile the green scare hysteria about melting icebergs and oceans flooding continues unabated.
MY BIL and SIL toured one of the camps about 7 years ago. My SIL said you could actually feel the evil as you approached the gate, by the time they had completed the tour she was physically ill.
To tell you the truth I could care less if anyone knows exact date trivia. The knowledge is of no practical consequence except for Jeopardy-type games. Rote memorization of very few things beyond beginning multiplication tables holds much use for most people beyond passing exams and neither does it improve analytic ability nor critical thinking skills.
In terms of history, I want the kids to learn from it, basically. This means not trivia but an appreciation of historical themes, movements, processes and outcomes, all considered within a moral framework. This sounds abstract and it is, but when faced with situations in contemporary society which mirror history, I want them to have the benefit of someone's past experience in recognizing and dealing with them.
Just thus far it is remarkable the similarities in Obama’s agenda and how Stalin worked...as with Hitler's rise.... But then Tyrant's all have similarities. Obama wrote and published a book for children about himself just like Hitler did.

I believe that...I know several times I had to pull away as I researched what happened....when I saw the Polish Elites, who knew this was happening...being led into the camps with their arrogance as if they were priviledged.... only to see their faces once they saw the reality of these camps and the utter brutality there.... staring them in the faces...it was stunning to watch this as the Military filmed it all.
They were first led to tables showing lamps etc. made from human skin....and they didn’t tell them at first what it was made of..when they did some of the woman fainted.
It was remarkable how Eisenhower conducted this....he wanted the world to see and spared nothing of the truth of it all.
You are soooo right!
Hopefully, our nation will continue to produce warriors. If not, we are doomed.

Revolutionary movements in Russia, Germany, United Kingdom, China, Cuba and the U.S. emphasized the importance of literacy and education for its youth. Major radical publishers had children’s departments and heated debates over expectations and development of socialist character traits raged within parties and in radical newspapers.
The purpose of the Children’s Literature section is to provide resources and documentation on the responsibility and challenge of socialist education and raising future generations in historical context. It is the aim of these pages to contribute to a contemporary communist theory of teaching and child-rearing...
If you’re trying to argue that women have fewer rights now than they did in the early 20th century, then you’re not making a very good case. The “status” that women supposedly had in the early 20th century included the inability to vote.”
including the venerated Ivy League institution the University of Pennsylvania,...When the Hell did THAT happen, Ivy League? After Sandusky was imprisoned or when Paterno became coach?
U of Penn, Philadelphia, Ivy League, 20,000 students
200 miles away is
Penn State, University Park (Happy Valley), now Big Ten, 50,000 students
Netflix has a 6-part series called, “Auschwitz:Inside the Nazi State” that I watched and thought provided excellent insight.
