Excellent post. I think you are right. The king will up the ante until a violent reaction occurs. First, it is in his nature because he thrives on the conflict. Second, because it furthers his plans to become totalitarian.
He has repeated over and over again that he will be following in Lincoln’s footsteps. He wants a civil war.

Well, I like to read John Titor's website, an alleged time traveller from 2036 where he said the two last Presidents prior to Civil War II and WWIII saw themselves a lot like Lincoln, the first one tried his best to keep the country together (GW Bush?) but the second of it saw him having the power like Lincoln and used it to rule with an iron hand (Obama?). Things get out of control where Red China and Russia panic and nuke some of our cities to take out the dictator's teeth (and thus save themselves) where the Red State rebels are grateful for the "assistance."
I'm dubious on the time travel aspect, but who really knows, but I put my money on where it is a story warning us what mist likely will happen if we remain on this path. I get the impression the person or people behind the story are of a libertarian/conservative bent with a little religion thrown in although I think the libertarian side dominates. I do see it as a warning where we could be headed.
