The phone company, when you can talk to them, will suggest to you that you take a standard desk phone out to your telephone interface panel, (the place where the phone line comes into your house), and plug it in there directly.
If you still have no dial tone, then the problem is in the line coming to your house, but you probably knew that already.

The actual problem was the city’s mower. It’s a huge behemoth of a machine with which the driver mows the verges.
Apparently, he mowed a phone tower because it was shorter than the grass, and he didn’t see it.
Phone and Intertubes off for two days in this area. Good thing that there are very few people living right around here.
This has never happened before, so I hope it’s another really long time before it happens again.
