Odd that he could destroy Court and then get trounced by King, even if he was out of shape for the King match.

Riggs could easily have made millions of tax free money betting against himself... he was totally in charge of “WHO WON”.. Taking money from the feminists..

Riggs may have been “bitching” all the way to the bank..
NAH!.. You think?... No tell all books will be happening as long as there is an IRS..

Of course maybe Riggs was stupid!... MAybe NOT?.........

EDIT TI ADD, Of course Riggs was himself, a showman and actually Helped to HYPE the entire match as a MALE vs FEMALE thing.

Only idiotic liberals will believe that this symbolizes something instead of what it is — a long retired 55 year old male tennis player vs an active and top-of-her-game female.

I always thought that the Rigss thing was a set up...a publicity stunt....

and btw, Griner can't even play in the Wnba let alone the nba.....you should watch her/him.....she'e/he's a stick figure out there.....

on a deeper note, the Riggs thing fits in pretty well in all professional sports.....just think, you think you're watching real action and real sports heroes but underneath it all, its fake...a concoction....

Once again Follow the Money. It was ripe for big betting and I’ll bet the MOB had a large large piece of all the action. Its like having tomorrows newspaper today.

I remember reading the double standards in the military. An 18 year old woman is about as effective in combat as a 40-50 year old man. I don’t see how the best of the best in women sports can realistically compete against any pro man unless he is much much older. But this story seems to make my opinion worthless.....as in maybe that isn’t even true and the scales are lopsided even more in a mans favor.

Bobby Riggs was an inveterate, (OK, "degenerate") gambler, who in the no-money era of professional tennis pulled many a bookmaking scam on the tour. How do you think they made a living in those days of wooden rackets and $5 court sneakers(Gonzalez, Segura, Trabert, Riggs, Connolly, etc.)?

I heard Bobby had 200 Large down on BJ ... and SHMG.... I bet my widow's mite right along with him and with odds, literally cleaned out my office so badly ... including the big boss... that I quit a week later. Bobby also attributed his splendid physical condition to following the same diet as BJ.

I was there for the match and even not being a serious student of tennis... it looked to me and my wife at the time, like Bobby threw it--

Not really. Anyone can have an "off" or "on" day. Happens in sports frequently where the underdog trounces the powerhouse.

If Riggs had really let himself go physically, it would have been even more likely that he would have had an "off" day.

The crazy thing about the match was that the media then and today treats it as proof of tennis equality, rather than as a fun, goofy stunt, of an old man and a top female star.

The media has always played this as serious male versus female.

"odd"

I used to play a lot of tennis, and I watched many matches. I saw both Riggs matches. He looked like he was hitting pitty pat balls directly into King's forehand. At the time, I thought what the h... is going on? Why isn't he playing against King like he played against Court-Smith? It all makes sense now.

Chris Evert gave an interview some years back where she talked about the time she was #1 and played a training match with a male player who was ranked about #100 in the world.

The guy beat her 6-0, 6-0.

Evert didn't think it was any surprise, or any big deal - she admitted the men's game is much faster.
