What makes the entire story about the mother dying in 1970 so interesting is the fact that, rather than just correcting the original article, with an explanation for how the mistake happened, they changed the story and then disappeared the first version—off the Web as well as off the Internet Archive, where it still resided up until about a year ago. Then it disappeared from the archive, too.

If it were just a simple matter of a small-town reporter being confused or “mishearing” what the woman said, then a correction would have explained that fact. But instead, the story simply mysteriously changed, and the other was scrubbed. One can envision the powers that be coming down on the head of that Maumelle reporter.

What was fascinating was that the original article and it's replacement, which originally bore a statement to the effect 'this is the first interview Virginia Goeldner has ever given' were time stamped and dated only HOURS apart! The wrath must have decended instantaneously! But it was hilarious that BOTH articles remained up for quite a while. Wish I had saved both on my harddrive, but I didn't...more's the pity.

In 1982, Madelyn wasn't telling anyone Stanley Ann Dunham had been married to a brilliant economist from Kenya and had a baby...and neither did she tell her co-workers at the bank, because there was an article in which one of them said they had no idea she was a grandmother until they saw the boy when he was going to school at Panahou.

She didn't become a 'grandmother' until she and Stanley Armour became his guardians - and in 1973, Stanley Ann Dunham - Soetoro and Lolo Soetoro filed a joint Tax Return on which they only claimed Maya as a dependant child. So with his 'mother and stepfather' living in Hawaii, zero wasn't living with 'his parents' - because 'she' wasn't his mother and no longer claimed to be, evidently.
