Fred, what ever became of this ‘Anna’ Obama? What kind of work did she do? Where did she live after Obama was born? Is she still alive today?
I’ll just jump in for a minute. She went to Seattle apparently not too long after the child was born and Mary Toutonghi babysat the child for some months.
On 0bama the Kenyan’s immigration documents there is a mention of a wife in the Philippines at some point but I can’t put my finger on the time frame. From my reading, Anna 0bama was most likely of Filipino extraction, maybe even born there? In HI there are tons of Filipinos, and at that time many were first or second generation.
How would I know? She wasn’t meant to be found, there’s no Seattle story in ‘Dreams’ - I think she was the student whose parents complained to the student advisor in Hawaii, she was probably the one enrolled at the U of HI for FALL 1960, and used the address of the Dunham & Pratt family as ANN S OBAMA.
The only person who I think does know her name would be Sally Jacobs, who had the unredacted INS file for two years...and all we have seen is the redacted file.
It would have been her parents who threatened to have him thrown out of the university, according to Zeituni, the Obama Aunt who was at home in Kenya when the letter arrived from the kenyan in which he said that her family didn’t want a black for a son-in-law.
That’s why the memo for the adoption was truncated IMO. Anna’s parents would have tried to persuade her to have the child adopted when it was about three months old.
