As a "conservative" alternative to Zinn's leftist "People's History of the United States," I recommend William J. Bennett's America: The Last Best Hope. It's a two-volume set, written from a much less ideological perspective. Bennett was Reagan's Secretary of Education, IIRC, and currently serves a nationally syndicated radio talk show host.

Paul Johnson wrote a book, IIRC, “A History of the American People”, which is a splendid survey.

I believe Paul is a conservative Briton. He has written a history of Christianity, one of the Jewish people, and a book called “Modern Times”, a history of the last century. Excellent and thorough historian.
