Lindsey Graham: "If I thought censoring the mail was necessary, I would suggest it"

Sen. Lindsey Graham would propose censoring Americans' "snail" mail if he thought it would help protect national security, the South Carolina Republican said Tuesday. But for now, he says he doesn't think it's necessary.

Faced with questions about the disclosure that the National Security Agency has been collecting phone and email records of citizens, Graham pointed to a World War II-era program in which the federal government censored mail. He said it was appropriate at the time and that he would support reinstating the program if it aided security efforts.

"In World War II, the mentality of the public was that our whole way of life was at risk, we're all in. We censored the mail. When you wrote a letter overseas, it got censored. When a letter was written back from the battlefield to home, they looked at what was in the letter to make sure they were not tipping off the enemy," Graham, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, told reporters on Capitol Hill. "If I thought censoring the mail was necessary, I would suggest it, but I don't think it is."

The Guardian newspaper revealed last week details of a government surveillance program enacted in response to terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, that secretly collects digital communication data from U.S. citizens. The source who provided the information to The Guardian, a Hawaii-based former government contractor named Edward Snowden, fled to Hong Kong and his whereabouts are currently unknown.

The new details about the program have sparked a debate over civil liberties and the extent of lawful government surveillance. On Tuesday, Graham suggested that Americans should be more willing to give up certain civil liberties to prevent future terrorist attacks.

“Will they pay my bills when they open them?”

No, but if they lose the bill and you end up with a late payment they’ll be happy to pass on the letter with the late payment charge.

THE DIFFERENCE today is in WWII we went to war to defeat the enemy, thus eliminate that risk. What are they doing today? I don’t know. Seem to be aiding, and abetting the enemy.

Iran declared war on us, and this country took their declaration of war, and said to them “Oh No, You really didn’t mean that”, and that’s where it stood for many years, and now our government under Obama is aiding and abetting Iran’s allies to assume control of the entire ME plus.

They’re all working for themselves and the press. Not the people. I’m done with all of them. Why keep hoping against hope that anything will change? With amnesty we’ll be outnumbered. Something big is going on behind the scenes that even the republicans can’t stop. We’re done - close the lights.

Why not come into our homes and read it before we send it? There's really no logical limit, once you head down the path of Security Uber Alles. To target people specifically would be to admit that mulitculturalism is a failure, or that some ideologies are more dangerous than Christianity, so everything must be monitored. Wouldn't look nice otherwise.

Rest assured, however, once the State gets enough "counter-terrorism" machinery in place, they'll stop pretending that they care about Islamic terror, and focus in on the real threat.

If you don't know who they consider the real threat to be, gentle reader, then go seek out a reflective surface.

Who needs to make laws these days anyway? Everything is directed, ordered and bound by regulation traced back to the edict. It’s for our safety...and security ***cough***.

The United States Congress authorized a declaration of war against the Axis Powers.

As such, there was an implied endgame....when one side of the warring parties surrendered. But the War on Terror is undeclared, against shadowing factions scattered throughout the world. As such, there IS no endgame.

Lindsey Graham and his fellow interventionists want the United States to assume a never-ending state of war, with increasing erosion of our civil liberties.

This position is not sustainable for a free society.
