Fred, your guess is as good as mine. I rather suspect she is the mother though. I don’t care HOW liberal you are, in 1960 few white families would have been happy if their 17 year old daughter was impregnated by a black foreigner. My guess is they shipped her over to Seattle or Kenya to give birth in one of those places and then they hoped she’d have the kid adopted. If to the Seattle area (where they had long time connections) how easy for them to pretend some white classmate knocked her up, and then skip across to Vancouver a few weeks before she was due and have her give birth there and convince her to have the kid adopted. Then mom changed her mind. It’s just not plausible for me, why a single white girl, age 18 would want to adopt a black baby — certainly not in 1961. Socially that would have been a stigma back then. Granted 10 years later things had radically changed. But no one had a crystal ball in 1960 when she became pregnant.
