Again we agree. He was not a Republican and certainly not a conservative. But he was also not a race-card-playing socialist.
And that right there is exactly the problem with the GOP-E.
Their constant mantra of "Our guy is not as bad as their guy" and yet there is a recent pattern of each successive GOP Presidential candidate being more and more like a Democrat.
Sure, everyone can see that Romney was/is nowhere near as bad as Obama.
That being said, Romney would have move things in a leftward fashion in dangerous ways, both morally and fiscally, that would have destroyed the national GOP, just exactly like he did in Massachusetts.

there is a recent pattern of each successive GOP Presidential candidate being more and more like a Democrat That is so true. Every GOP Presidential candidate should be part Calvin Coolidge and part Ronald Reagan. But as you said, that's no longer the case.
So what's the solution? Armed revolution? No. The solution is to send the GOP the way of the Whigs and replace it with a real Coolidge-Reagan party.
Of course, that's easier said than done. The current GOP-E has lots of money and lots of influence.
