Read the 14th Amendment and tell me how it applies to Cruz, or anyone else not “born or naturalized in the United States”.

“All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”
Cruz was born in Canada. How does the 14th even apply?
I agree. The 14th amendment doesn’t apply to Cruz. At best he would be a statutory citizen, but not a 14th amendment citizen and certainly not a natural-born citizen.
I agree that the reasoning is obscure, but Cruz was naturalized by US Code because of his citizen mother. Ultimately the naturalization amendment, the 14th, provides the Article 1 Section 8 foundation.
That just clouds the issue. I expected someone to ask why I referred to Cruz's father as "Canadian." No one did, but perhaps you will. It was my recollection that when Cruz' father was a Cuban refugee, he was given, or applied for Canadian citizenship. I couldn't find the biographical reference, and know that memory is often imperfect. It is possible that Cruz' father never repudiated his natural born Cuban citizenship? Still, he didn't become a US citizen, similar to Chester Arthur's father, who didn't naturalize till Chester was fourteen, which forever joins Barack and Chester as the two men in the White House ineligible to hold the office.
