Our ‘level of ignorance’ on global warming
The Charleston Daily Mail ^ | April 3, 2013 | Don Surber

THE high priests of global warming are in a panic these days as their prophecies of doom have proved to be as credible as a the Mayan calendar.

"Research by Ed Hawkins of University of Reading shows surface temperatures since 2005 are already at the low end of the range projections derived from 20 climate models and if they remain flat, they will fall outside the models' range within a few years," the newspaper Australian reported over the weekend.

As always, global warmists blame carbon dioxide.

"Another paper published by leading climate scientist James Hansen, the head of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, says the lower than expected temperature rise between 2000 and the present could be explained by increased emissions from burning coal," the Australian reported.

Hansen is wrong. Al Gore is wrong. The International Panel on Climate Change is wrong.

But what do I know? My degree is in communication. For expert opinion, I turn to people such as physicist Freeman Dyson.

"When I listen to the public debates about climate change, I am impressed by the enormous gaps in our knowledge, the sparseness of our observations and the superficiality of our theories," Dyson wrote in his book, "Many Colored Glass: Reflections on the Place of Life in the Universe."

"Many of the basic processes of planetary ecology are poorly understood. They must be better understood before we can reach an accurate diagnosis of the present condition of our planet.

"When we are trying to take care of a planet, just as when we are taking care of a human patient, diseases must be diagnosed before they can be cured. We need to observe and measure what is going on in the biosphere, rather than relying on computer models."

Then there is climatologist Judith Curry.....

The world climate is a mixture or chemistry, biology, geology, and nuclear physics, on an epic chaotic scale. Your average meteorologist can barely predict the weather into next week. Over geologic epochs, world weather patterns do change, sometimes for the better, but mostly for the worse. The point is, 10,000 years from now, scientists have no idea of whether where you’re stand right now will either be a hot desert, or under a mile thick layer of ice.

Anyone who believes the global warming/climate change hysteria is actually about saving the planet is a dupe. It is a scheme for taxation to empower government and enrich those selling the concept.

Trying to steer or modify the planets climate, compares to -

Trying to steer an ocean liner with a hand paddle and not being able to determine which direction you are going or which direction you came. Other then that, our science is not very well suited for the task.

As I sit here freezing my butt off in the coldest long running spring I can ever remember.

Where is that stinking ground hog that said winter was over.

Well the groundhog is about as accurate as a climate scientist.

There’s a guy that basically showed climate in relation to the expanding or shirking of the Sun — you know - since it’s a big nuclear explosion contained in a globe...as it expands - the Earth heats up or vice versa...makes perfect sense...and there’s nothing Man can do about it! Of course, that proven fact of a gem doesn’t advance political agendas!

One doesn’t need a science degree to doubt the conclusions of this “research”. A simple understanding of words like “cause” and “effect” and “trend” will get you a long way. An appreciation of numbers and how some are bigger than others or much bigger than others (like the concentration water vapor vs that of CO2) helps too. Lastly a sense of complexity and how simple equations cannot abstract a huge and intricate network of natural occurrences with any acceptable level of confidence will bring you quite reasonably to doubt the urgency for action. A decent HS education is sufficient.

But, but, Al Gore said that the Sun having anything to do with Earth's warming is B----it. Al Gore couldn't have been wrong, could he?

Okay, sarcasm aside, I did once see a clip of Al Gore at some Global Warming get together and he was yelling about the "deniers" and listing all the things they say could be contributing to the (really miniscule) warming. At one point he shouts, "they say it's the Sun --- Bull****". At that point I thought, anybody who remains seated in that auditorium after he says something that stupid is just nuts. The Sun doesn't have anything to do with how warm we are on Earth? That is insane. Didn't we learn about the Sun's role in warming our planet in grade school?

Anyway, I have never believed in AGW, partially because I had already been thru the global cooling hysteria back in the 70's. But, after viewing the Goracle shouting that the Sun has nothing to do with warming our planet, I just shook my head and realized that my opinion that AGW is nothing more than a religion had been confirmed.

I was in grade school in the 70’s...yes I’m 42...but they were talking back then about another Ice Age coming down from Canada...then this...goes to show that politicians will say to do what they want and will use events to pass their agenda...it’s spell bounding how any of them have a following...well, I’m off to drink some green Kool-Aid!
