Let me see if I understand. John McCain, a child of two U.S. citizens, born in Panama because his father was an admiral in the U.S. Navy and there due to orders, would not be eligible to be president?

If he were born on base, then some people feel that yes, he would be a natural born citizen.

If he were born elsewhere, then he would be a citizen, not a natural born citizen.

However, if we use the currently popular standard for natural born citizenship, then McCain would have also been a natural born citizen of Panama, just as many say an anchor baby or a child born here to illegal aliens is also a natural born citizen.

These days? As they used to say in the 70s while slowly exhaling, "It's whatever you want it to be, man. Whatever you want it to be." Onward through the fog!
