Quite simply, the song is written from the devil's perspective. In a lot of ways, it's a warning, and it shows how throughout history, MEN have accomplished the work of the devil.

Sure, MarkL, I get it. "Lucifer" is still here and Jesus isn't. "Lucifer" wins and Jesus looses, is that it, MarkL? And "Lucifer" sealed Jesus' fate?

So you're saying that the devil didn't tempt Jesus? And Jesus didn't die on the cross? And in the lyrics. as well as scriptures, it's Pilate, not the devil, who washed his hands and sends Jesus to crucifixion.

It places the devil at the hundred years war, the Russian revolution, WWII, in effect, the devil is involved in all human calamities. Not sure about the reference to Bombay though.

Sinners/Saints, Criminals/Cops, Heads/Tails: Remember, this is the devil talking, and he's the prince of lies, who excels in twisting truths and confusing even the best human being.

Hope you guessed my name, um yeah But what's puzzling you Is the nature of my game

Can a man, even the most pure hearted, ever try to beat the devil when the devil sets the rules? Best to avoid the devil and his works, which is the warning here:

So if you meet me Have some courtesy Have some sympathy, and some taste Use all your well-learned politesse Or I'll lay your soul to waste

Mark

What's troubling is that you seem to have no problem with that.

In a lot of ways, it's a warning, and it shows how throughout history, MEN have accomplished the work of the devil.

Actually, it's a threat. Enjoy being entertained by being threatened by Satan?

As heads is tails

Just call me Lucifer

Cause I'm in need of some restraint

So if you meet me

Have some courtesy

Have some sympathy, and some taste

Use all your well-learned politesse

Or I'll lay your soul to waste, um yeah

Lyrics like this are not an effrontery to your "conservative" philosophy? Really?

So you're saying that the devil didn't tempt Jesus? And Jesus didn't die on the cross? And in the lyrics. as well as scriptures, it's Pilate, not the devil, who washed his hands and sends Jesus to crucifixion.

That's not what I said. Christ certainly died on the cross of His own will, not Satan's and while Satan will would have been just as content to have had Jesus dead and buried -- i.e., Lucifer sealing his "fate," through Pilate's action -- He instead conquered Satan and conquered Death by rising again from the dead. BIG difference in the accuracy of the telling of that event.

But you won't hear about that in a song sung, as you correctly observe -- from the devil's perspective, now will you?

So, if you are or at least claim to be a Christian, what value is there for you to derive any amount of entertainment from anything belched at you from Satan's perspective?

Let's say that maybe you're not a Christian per se, but maybe just a nice guy who considers himself to be to some extent a "principled" conservative. Minimally, as a conservative, who appears to acknowledge Satan's hand in the all the events described, how do you justify being entertained by listening to the epicenter of evil reveling in his accomplishments?

Sinners/Saints, Criminals/Cops, Heads/Tails: Remember, this is the devil talking, and he's the prince of lies, who excels in twisting truths and confusing even the best human being.

Bingo! And you find all that to be so entertaining, why?

Can a man, even the most pure hearted, ever try to beat the devil when the devil sets the rules?

The devil doesn't set the rules for me. Does he for you? He will only if you allow him to.

Best to avoid the devil and his works....

And best not to allow yourself to find entertainment by him or a place in your life or in your time for any for him.

As for myself, speaking as both a Christian and as a conservative THAT is why it matters, and that is where I find the disingenuity and self-interest in anything Jagger says or does.

FReepers need to apply a lot more critical thinking to this whole thing instead of exhibiting a knee-jerk congratulations to this guy who has done so much over the years to oppose the conservative cultural values we presumably claim to cherish.

FReegards!
