There was a time when mental cases like this were committed to asylums after being judged dangerous to themselves or others.
The asylums were largely closed by the early 60s.

Ironic, but the old Connecticut State Psychiatric Hospital is only about 1.5 miles from Sandy Hook where the shootings occurred.

It’s now closed and empty.
