Did SNL's 'Romney is racist' sketch go too far?

Comedy has always been a place for taboo subjects, but many are asking if Saturday Night Live went too far with a sketch aired Thursday night in which Gov. Mitt Romney is repeatedly portrayed as a racist.

The sketch, which aired during a "SNL Weekend Update Thursday" special on NBC last night, was based on the recent "leaked video" of Gov. Romney stating he will not try to win over the 47% of voters who loyally support President Obama. However, SNL took the premise further, by portraying Romney as secretly racist. At one point in the sketch, Jason Sudekis (who portrays Romney) says "When I say 'these people,' I mean black people." At another point, Romney ridicules McDonald's workers as only able to speak Spanish, and says poor people hate working.

TheWrap.com, the entertainment news website that is unapologetically liberal, took issue with the tone of Romney's treatment. "SNL tends to pick on politicians' surface-level flaws, from stuffiness to slips of the tongue -- the kind of traits that politicians themselves might make light of to appear more human," staff writer Tim Molloy said. "With Romney, the show has gone unusually far by suggesting Romney is secretly dismissive of people of other races."

SNL's harsh treatment of Romney is even more glaring compared to the show's treatment of President Obama, who is often portrayed in a more respectful tone...

SNL is long past its prime. Vulgar, nasty and long past its prime. - Things on tv like SNL have done their part to keep liberals in power.

Soon, if not already, the American people will see through this massive character assassination going on against Romney.

They will not like it and will vote accordingly.

I am finding myself literally hating liberals, what they stand for, the tactics they use, and what they seek to do to this once great country.

Yes, where are the jokes about Obama not taking a phone call from the Libyan Ambassador as he is being murdered and such as that?

CNN) — Chevy Chase didn’t look like Gerald Ford and didn’t sound like Gerald Ford. But in the mid-1970s, when “Saturday Night Live” first went on the air, Chase — then a writer and cast member of the show — made his impression of the president, rife with pratfalls and slapstick, the talk of the country.

He also made the president a butt of jokes, which was intentional, Chase told CNN in an interview.

“[Ford] was a sweet man, a terrific man — [we] became good friends after, but ... he just tripped over things a lot,” he said. “It’s not that I can imitate him so much that I can do a lot of physical comedy and I just made it, I just went after him. And ... obviously my leanings were Democratic and I wanted [Jimmy] Carter in and I wanted [Ford] out, and I figured look, we’re reaching millions of people every weekend, why not do it.”

Over the years, “Saturday Night Live’s” political satires have become a mainstay of the show, sometimes to startling effect.

Al Franken — now the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate from Minnesota — and his then writing partner, Tom Davis, wrote a wicked takeoff of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein’s book, “The Final Days,” which included Dan Aykroyd as a bitter Richard Nixon and John Belushi as a toadying Henry Kissinger. In the mid-’80s, a sketch starring Phil Hartman as Ronald Reagan showed the president, often lampooned as forgetful, with a razor-sharp command of the Iran-Contra situation, cutting deals in Arabic and barking orders at his staff.

More recently, Dana Carvey’s malaprop-laden impression of George H.W. Bush, Hartman’s puppy-dog Bill Clinton, Will Ferrell’s George W. Bush and Tina Fey’s Sarah Palin have embedded themselves in the culture.

Though Chase believes the show leans left, and Fey’s Palin is an attempt to hurt the Republicans, Marc Liepis, NBC Universal senior director of late night publicity, had no comment.

CNN: You mean to tell me in the back of your mind you were thinking, hey I want Carter ...

Chase: Oh, yeah.

CNN: And I’m going to make him look bad.

Chase: Oh yeah. What do you think they’re doing now, you think they’re just doing this because Sarah’s funny? No, I think that the show is very much more Democratic and liberal-oriented, that they are obviously more for Barack Obama. [In the ‘70s], out of the Nixon era, and it was not unlikely that I might go that direction.

CNN: I talked to one political pundit who said, I think Chevy Chase cost Ford the presidency.

Chase: When you have that kind of a venue and power where you can reach so many millions of people and you’ve become a show that people watch, you know, you can affect a lot of people, and humor does it beautifully, because humor is perspective and has a way of making judgment calls. ... So I think there was no question that it had major effect and in fact, in speaking with his family and then later him, and even reading some of his books ... he felt so, too.

They accomplished exactly what they wanted. Does anyone even know anyone that watches that show any more. Now a few people are feigning offense, so more will tune in for a week or two. Ignore them, and they will go away.

And the Word went forth from every mouth of the Media, and the Sheep heard the Word, and they saw that it was good.

And the Sheep cried with a loud voice, “Who is like unto the Media, whose word pours forth with such volume and unity?”

And the Media saw that it was good.

I agree. And while I am on record as saying that Romney has no chance, and I can’t stand him, I couldn’t agree with you more that this went too far and they will do ANYTHING to get Dear Leader elected.

I know ABSOLUTELY NO ONE who watches this show...not even one single episode that they mention in passing...in at least fifteen years. No one! Even when they were impersonating Palin, people talked about the clips they ran on the news, but no one actually put themselves through the Chinese water torture of actually sitting thru the program. Are college kids keeping it alive? Where are they getting their audience? Are the gov unions forcing their members to watch this talentless crap?

Just standard SNL stupidity. No one really takes them serious anymore. They would have been off the air years ago if there was any competition in that timeslot.

Excellent analogy.

The news equivalent of a TV dinner.

All these leftists who pride themselves on being “locavores” when it comes to their food, wouldn’t recognize raw news if it came up and bit them on the ankle.

Would it be OK to do a comedy sketch of 0bama biting the heads off of live babies? It would have much more of a seed of truth in it.

SNL is crap.
Used to be funny.
Products of public school indoctrination.

They rely (as does Bath-House Barry) on the ignorance of their audience.

Correct me if I’m wrong. Isn’t every member of the cast and crew of SNL a diehard liberal who thinks Obama walks on water? They’re finally being honest with their beliefs. Why would anyone expect them to excoriate the idiot in the White House just because he’s been a rank disaster as president?
