For the SHTF list?
I know a south GA. Redneck that took plenty ofdeer and hawgs with a 22lr.
Is there any research on which commercial .22lr round is the most powerful considering bullet design, grain weight and powder load?
It is also a Mafia favorite for revoking franchises.
1000 rounds is just a start. Ammo is much cheaper by the case.
I used to have a Hi-Standard derringer that fired the .22 long round. It was one of the best handguns (and safest) that I have ever fired. And quite accurate even at a respectable distance. Would love to have another one.
Here's a video of a CCI 40 grain Velocitor into ballistics gel from a Ruger 10/22 rifle:

And here's the same round from a Walther P22 pistol:

Out of the rifle, the hollow point opens up and dumps all of its energy into the gel, while out of the pistol the .22 punches a hole all the way through.
No, I am not volunteering to be shot by either one, and a .22 on you is better than the .44 magnum you left at home. If you are just an ordinary citizen carrying concealed for protection, I wouldn't have any qualms about carying a .22 if the choice were that or nothing.
But I would recommend the largest caliber you can comfortably carry.
.22LR Ping.
“Now that’s just silly. Who the hell needs to shoot arm chairs?”
I hope the Secret Service doesn’t see that as a veiled threat against the president.

I too have noticed different results, offhand I believe the Subsonic works better in the Ruger pistol where Thunderbolt works very well for the 10-22.
I have had mixed results using super duper .22 ammo, usually it does scatter all over the place. But a smart person will realize the barrel twist rate plays very much with heavier bullets. Faster twist is needed for heavier bullets.
Needs copper jacket.
The venerable 22 is a terrier, but I'm always thinking about THUMP
I think the CCI Velocitor would be a good candidate.
Bad guy [Russian accent]: Some like the large calibres but I like the point two two. The bullet enters the skull and bounces around scrambling the brain.
Victim: NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooo

Some TV show, maybe NCIS-LA
Poor QC but a decent Idea.
The standard 22lr actually develops 90 horsepower of energy over a 5-inch in-barrel stretch, so it’’s not a toy.
The other thing, apart from the pinpoint accuracy, is that a suppressed .22 is virtually soundless. Out of a rifle barrel, it doesn’t really make much sound unsuppressed.
Thanks for that link. I am right handed and unfortunately have damage to my right wrist which limits my practice.
Since I am convinced that for me, practice is much more important than caliber, what would be “softest” handgun suggestion considering size for carry.
For the most part we have settled on 223.
but there is no reason that the 22 cant do the same job.
A 223 is just a heavier payload on a higher velocity bottle neck case.
I have a ‘59 Mossberg 144LS w/ 10x Bushnell glass, in pristine condition, and I’m feeding it this:
Feeds and works beautifully!
