In the 2008 campaign had speechwriters who could produce a kind of "poetic" writing and he delivered it well.
A challenger who promises to "change" things can go very far with that sort of thing if he has the media on his side.
Similarly, the new guy can make headway with some unscripted utterances when nothing is really on the line and when he has a lot of adoring followers.
Now that Obama has an actual record to defend and can't rely on the "poetry" he's having real trouble getting his message across.
