They can. Possibly. This is a very deliberate and strategic move. This in not Karl Rove’s seasonal pawn grabbing. This marks an attempt to permanently abandon social conservatives in an effort to move towards occupying the political spectrum of the middle to the center left. In short, they will trade the conservatives they had for the chance of permanently picking up moderates to middle left. This is a well thought out structural change for the GOP which wishes only to retain power and to have a more credulous and submissive base in perpetuity. Any conservatives or former conservatives who continue to vote GOP is gravy, but not really part of the plan. The plan is to raid some of the Democrat base and permanently move the whole GOP base to the left.
