Politicians sometimes think they can get away with saying something profoundly offensive or just plain stupid by acting like it was a joke. It never works, just like it didn’t work today when Mr. Romney shamelessly played the birther card in what seems like an increasingly desperate campaign against President Obama.
Speaking in Commerce, Mich., about his Michigan roots, Mr. Romney said: “No one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised.”
Get it? Everyone knows he’s from Michigan, but nobody is really sure where the president is from.
It’s not like Mr. Romney has shunned the birther crowd. He took the stage earlier this year with Donald Trump, who ranted about Mr. Obama’s citizenship. Mr. Romney’s son, Matt, said during the primaries that his father might consider releasing his tax returns if Mr. Obama released his birth certificate and his grades.
In April 2011, Mr. Romney himself used the “well if he says so” dodge that many Republicans love. “I think the citizenship test has been passed,” Mr. Romney said. “I believe the president was born in the United States. There are real reasons to get this guy out of office.”
Citizenship test? Barack Obama did not have to take a citizenship test. And why couldn’t Mr. Romney cut out the “I believe” preamble? The president was born in the United States.
But today’s crack was way over the line. His audience laughed and applauded, probably not because they thought Mr. Romney was doing hilarious stand-up comedy, but because they knew exactly what he was up to...

It was a stupid comment, an unforced error. Romney isn’t a “birther,” but now he’s given the opposition ammo to say that he is, or is catering to extreme elements, etc. Stupid. He should have known the media would pounce on it.
The Obama campaign does not want Romney to keep repeating the joke. They know he is really an alien from another planet.

Delusional. My brother, a proud ex-hippie Obama voter, told me yesterday that he thinks Obama is a terrible president - more terrible than Jimmy Carter. Has not kept his promises. Has no clue on fixing economy. He will vote for Romney and said he thought Ryan seemed like a solid guy. I almost fell over.
This is a true story and I believe it is not isolated. Obama is losing, and his scum sucking presstitutes know it.
Also, it gives them yet another chance to bring up those tax returns. It basically writes itself: "Nobody's asking me why I paid 13 percent in taxes."

I’m 98% sure it was very intentional. Governor Romney is getting inside Mr. Obama and his team’s heads, on purpose. Last time he did so, out came “you didn’t build that.”
It was not an error at all. It was a smart move by Romney to scare the POS and his goons. They have been crying and squealing like little piglets all day. Romney outsmarted Obama again and it will not be the last time. IMHO BO is toast and he knows it. Gives him more wasted time dealing with this issue and hiding in a corner while his minions try to “spin” it in the news. It Ain’t working anymore.
I already did, far more than I could really afford, but our country is in peril.
All of America is having an episode from Total Rekall, where thy dream of a socialist society, where unicorns dance with rainbow painted lions, nobody has to work and all is happy.
Problem is the real world is still revolving, people are bor, people die.
We all have to prove our worth and to prove our ability, when a society is built upon leadership without any proven criteria, documentation or even education the society fails.
You don’t hire a person who cannot prove he has a drivers license, a doctors license or a pilots license, but America hired a person without any documentation. What kind of trust and faith does that create?
Absolutely nothing, no trust for any Federal branch because nobody went and checked to see if the POTUS was actually qualified, oh no they were too busy in their Total Rekall dream of trying to make Communism work.
