Lincoln's English gold watch was purchased in the 1850s from George Chatterton, a Springfield, Illinois, jeweler. Lincoln was not outwardly vain, but the fine gold watch was a conspicuous symbol of his success as a prominent Illinois lawyer.

Interesting. It shows that people often do recognize history as its being made.

It says “Jeff Davis”.
That seems significant, but no mention in the article.
To: DogByte6RER
Seems like they missed some text there.
Doesn't that say "Jeff Davis", as in Jefferson Davis, POTUS of the Confederacy, right there?
He was elected Nov. 6, 1861 while the watch is signed April 13, 1861.
Why is "Jeff Davis" there?

It says Jeff Davis. That seems significant, but no mention in the article.
It would have been, had he finished as he intended: "... sucks dirty donkey d---." But just then the boss walked in and he had to close up the watch.

This angle should’ve been used for National Treasure 2.

Because though not yet “President,” he was still a well-known traitor.

Stauer has been selling a replica of this watch, complete with the inscription, for a couple of years. More history on it is in their marketing materials/website.

It seems that, judging from your replies 8 and 12, you've got some suppressed and repressed hostilities.
You should talk to a professional about them.
