Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett wants you to know that he is not a birther, but he says he wants proof of Barack Obama’s citizenship before putting his name on the Arizona ballot.

In a radio interview today, Bennett said he is just doing his job of making sure “that those people whose names are on the ballot have met the qualifications for the office they are seeking.” He says he has been trying for eight weeks to get documents from Hawaii.

In a statement just released, Bennett says: “First, I have been on the record since 2009 that I believe the president was born in Hawaii. I am not a birther. At the request of a constituent, I asked the state of Hawaii for a verification in lieu of a certified copy. We’re merely asking them to officially confirm they have the president’s birth certificate in their possession and are awaiting their response.”

“If birth can’t be proved does this mean that Sheriff Joe can apprehend Obama under SB1070 the next time Obama shows up in Arizona?”

Serious:
If I understand the law correctly (based only on what I’ve heard others say about the law), law enforcement could legally inquire as to a detainee’s immigration status if said detainee was stopped or arrested for some reason other than being suspected of being an illegal alien. Then, if an illegal, law enforcement is tasked only to notify INS for whatever action is required under federal immigration laws (i.e. initiation of deportation proceedings, etc.)

Not so serious:
So, under your scenario I suppose Arizona law enforcement could attempt to take Obama into detention in order to give them time to contact INS. There would be a standoff between them and the Secret Service personnel and news helicopters would provide footage and everyone could watch the drama unfold.

This could take, say, 10 minutes while Obama is sitting in the Presidential limo. After shaking hands with the gathering throng, kissing a few babies and making an impromptu speech about the runaway, rogue “cops” in Arizona. This would take 15 more minutes, all the while his staff is drawing up a generic, all-encompassing presidential pardon, pardoning himself for all crimes he may or may not have committed over the 24 preceding hours.

In about 45 minutes total, Obama would be back on his way to Taco Bell, and the media would have a field day with it all for the next 5 months or so. Books would be written, movies made and everyone would have something interesting to talk about around the water coolers throughout the nation.

Semi-serious:
Oh, and Holder would be tasked to sue Arizona yet again for violating federal civil rights laws involving racial profiling of the first Black POTUS.

How could Obama be born in Hawaii and have a name change in the Canadian Rockies?
