Indonesia Finds SuperJet 100 Crash Site

Russian plane hit side of steep volcano- no survivors

Rescuers found shattered wreckage earlier today of the Russian-made Sukhoi Superjet 100 that hit the side of an Indonesian volcano at full-speed during a sales demonstration flight- all 45 people on board were feared dead.

"So far we haven't found any survivors, but we are still searching," he said as teams of soldiers, police and volunteers continued to troop up the slopes. The spot is basically unreachable on foot. so evidence and bodies are being placed in nets/hammocks and raised by helicopters from the Indonesian Air Force.

The Sukhoi Superjet 100 -Russia's first new model of passenger jet since the fall of the USSR- carried with it high hopes for Russian passenger aircraft sales, both domestically and internationally.

The doomed plane was carrying dozens of representatives from local airlines and journalists on what was supposed to be a quick, 50-minute demonstration flight Wednesday.... but 21 minutes out of Jakarta, the Russian pilot asked for permission to drop from 10,000 feet to 6,000 feet, according to the chief of the national search and rescue agency in Indonesia.

They then promptly disappeared -inexplicably- from the radar screen.

Flying at 6,000 feet very close to the 7,000-foot volcano, the plane smashed into the jagged ridge on top of the dormant Mount Salak at a speed of approximately 480 mph.

The impact sent debris tumbling down the side of the mountain, leaving a giant hole in the side of the volcano's side... trees were blown-off clean.

The Superjet 100 was developed with the encouragement of the Kremlin in-order for the Russians to regain a foothold in the passenger plane export market. The country's commercial passenger aircraft industry all but evaporated in the financial chaos of the Yeltsin era.

Potential buyers will scrutinize the crash investigation for signs of flaws in the plane.

The Left has to sanitize failures of the Left in order to make collectivism appealing.

Interestingly, a Boeing office was on my site the last 18 hrs straight, downloading everything

I was on this story from the start two days ago because I found it particularly interesting the Russians were planning export offensives in the civil aircraft industry.

But their industry under Putin is one Soviet-style 5-year-plans BUT also forced unions withing the Russian Federation’s aircraft companies... when the only good thing about that business in Soviet times was often fierce competition between the ‘design bureaus’, such as Mig, Ilyushin, Sukhoi, Yak, et al.... that was what brought-about some of their best designs, actually

“And if they find no flaws they will go ahead with purchases?”

That would be the $6M question, but obviously a very touchy subject, given the spotty Soviet safety record w/ Tu-154 and such

I would now expect Kremlinbucks to flow in the direction of Indonesian crash investigators...

“what sort of moron would request flying permission for 6000 feet when near a 7000 foot mountain? What air traffic controller would say ok?”

He asked permission but it was not actually ever granted, the Russians fell of radar and lost radio contact seconds after making the request.

Mind you,I never have flown...and never will fly...in a Soviet made aircraft.I’ll walk first... I, regrettably, have, and your decision is sound.

FOX early report on this says it may have been a fly by wire problem but not certain yet.

ok, I am duly impressed with your knowledge of Indonesia.

However, I thought this plane took off from Russia?

“Soviet aircraft are often flown by careless carriers.”

Yes, for example, Aeroflot. If Russian-built commercial aircraft were so superior, then I assure you that Western airlines would buy them. They don't. (The one exception I know about is a regional Italian airline that flies a few Su-100s.)

They were showing it off to clients in Indonesia. 2900 KM will get you from Jakarta to Moscow in one hop ~ it's about 8000 KM on that trip.

Maybe to Kamchatka ~

From the first paragraph in the article above: "The doomed plane was carrying dozens of representatives from LOCAL airlines and journalists on what was supposed to be a quick, 50-minute demonstration flight Wednesday"

If they were smart, they would have made the whole plane out of those fragments.

Killing potential clients isn’t exactly a solid business plan.

That is what Communists do best.

LOL, reminds me of “One, Two, Three”:

C.R. MacNamara: Cigarette? Cigar?

Peripetchikoff: Here, take one of these.
C.R. Macnamara: Thanks. Hm, ‘Made in Havana’.
Peripetchikoff: We have trade agreement with Cuba. They send us cigars, we send them rockets.
C.R. Macnamara: Good thinking.

C.R. MacNamara: You know something? You guys got cheated. This is a pretty crummy cigar.
Peripetchikoff: Do not worry. We send them pretty crummy rockets.
