Was CNN just playing along to fulfill a LEO request?

What kind of sentence does “false report” to an officer have?

OTOH She was only supposed to be a secret witness to public. LEO and CNN knew who she was. Is there witness tampering involved?

I doubt it. There are plenty of unreliable witnesses, in the grans scheme of things. As I recall, her sworn statement is either brief, or non-existent. Police say she didn't want to give one. It's perfectly legal to tell the police one thing, and say the opposite in a press interview. That happens often.

It varies, nominal sentence up to maybe years.

Technically, no, or I don't think so. I think she's doing exactly what she wants, nobody is coercing her or threatening her to induce her to say what she's saying. And again, there is nothing illegal about making false statements to the press and to the public - within the boundaries of defamation and inciting riot.
