My husband and I and another couple were attacked by a black gang in the 1960's. Our friend was injured seriously but we managed to escape without more incident because I was able to get into our car to blow the horn. They didn't want the noise to attract attention so they left.

Before they attacked us, they surrounded us and called us "whitey," and some other not so nice names.

Those were tough times and it looks like events are beginning to escalate again. My advice is to avoid the neighborhoods that harbor gangs, etc. and to make as much noise as possible when danger approaches.

If you are unfortunate enough to be in such a neighborhood, I think that noise would just serve to attract more hostiles, unless the noise was rapid, sustained gunfire.
