“Remember, Sam Houston went there during the Civil War. He opposed that war and was not very popular in Texas at the time.”

Are you sure? He was a Unionist and opposed the War, but he lived in Texas at the time and died there in 1863. He had lived in Indian Territory, Oklahoma, back in 1829.

Sam Houston was the Governor of Tenneessee and the 1st president of the Country of Texas. The city of Allen's Landing, Texas changed it's name to Houston, Texas in honor of Sam.

Tenneessee is known to this day as The Volunteer State due to the large number of tenneesseans who volunteered and fought for Texas independence.

Sam had an sore on his stomach that wouldn't heal and they say he stank to 'high heaven' because of it. It is claimed that he left Tenneessee (in shame) after his wife left him...some say because of the smell.
