I followed your train of thought when I read this. The question is going to be not what country but what county...although Canada will be stable I am sure. Rural or exurban areas where people are self reliant and maybe not all that outwardly prosperous to begin with will probably be safe places. Aroostook, Lincoln, Washington counties in Maine all come to mind. Even Northern Connecticut and Western Massachusetts would fit the bill, as would upstate NY. I am sure no doubt we can put a long list together on this forum. I feel certain however in saying that no industrious person will ever starve in Aroostook County. The Amish who recently moved to Smyrna are really prospering as a matter of fact.

You are on to something. Worst case scenario, you want to be in a community where you can control your circumstances. If you have a good or services you can sell or barter, you can get by. Especially if those goods or services are something that would be in demand during hard times. (mechanic, construction, plumbing, farming, etc).

NW CT is not quite far enough from the inner cities of NYC, Brideport, New Haven or Hartford. And NE CT is a little too close to Providence.

Maine sounds like a better option in this area, though you better have enough woodland for all the fuel you’ll need to get through the winters.
