As far as I can tell, he was basically saying that we can start treating Mexico the way we treat Canada as soon as Mexico is basically indistinguishable (economically) from Canada.

This quote keeps popping up here. If one reads Perry's description of Mexico, he is basically calling it a cockroach infested sewer.

It means we have addressed pollution concerns, made substantial progress in stopping the spread of disease, and rid our crossings of illicit drug smuggling activity.

Not very complimentary to the Mexicans, is it?

You know, I’m a high school dropout and I just can’t find any agreement with Vicente Faux.

It was barely solicitous.

Don’t look north, you might have a heart attack when you see how we have an entire border with no fence that people are crossing all the time.

Or maybe you actually believe that we should have a border fence with Canada? If not, you’ll have to explain how, if Mexico miraculously became another Canada, we’d still want a border fence, rather than having borders similar to the ones we have with Canada.

Although I guess it’s easier for you to simply ignore all the caveats in a speech you quote. At least you quoted them, so we could see what you were ignoring.

Lots of people said things in August of 2000 that they'd be embarrassed about now. Remember all the talk about the Internet sector going through a healthy correction, after which it'd come roaring back bigger and stronger than ever?

I've actually found an FR thread from 2002 or so with several commenters attacking Rep. Issa - yes, the same Rep. Darryl Issa - as a pro-Muslim sympathizer. I'm sure those posters would be embarrassed to recall their words now, given Rep. Issa's more recent doggedness in exposing frauds.

Now to my point. Has Gov. Perry shown any embarrassment, or expressed any regret, about those words he said back in the heady days of August 2000?
