I’ve heard the libertarian position on immigration expressed a number of times as: Any immigrant who can come to the US and not become a ward of the state, i.e., be self-supporting, then an many as desire to come should be allowed. No limits.

And that sounds about like what RP is saying in so many words.

Problem is, that approach won't work until the defacto subsidization of Illegals through our broken Federal and State systems if fixed and immigrants, whether here legally or illegally, do not have access to our benefit system.

That’s not quite enough. They also need to meet their obligations to society — pay their taxes, obey all our laws including local zoning laws and insurance requirements, accept English as the only language for schooling and government interaction, etc. How does Ron Paul intend to ensure all that compliance happens ?
