Seriously? So SS is still sending out checks to a guy who died decades ago? The government’s quite inefficient, I concede, but that scenario doesn’t pass the “sniff test.” Likewise, even without kin, the guy had to have died somewhere: in short, he had a death certificate. If he had Medicare in his dying years (that, after all, was the purported reason for his even applying for SS so late in life), then the hospital where he died most certainly would have had his SSN in its records or other parallel proof of Medicare eligibility. What motive would such a facility have had for keeping his SSN off the death certificate?
Moreover, let’s pretend the guy died in the wilderness, no hospital, no medical providers, no death certificate. Then how the hell did Madelyn Dunham know when it was “safe” for BHO to make use of the SSN she secured for him?

So Barry didn’t have a job prior to 1985? If so, wouldn’t he have needed an SSN? How could an employer possibly deduct payroll taxes without an SSN? But if he’d somehow managed to secure an SSN for this purpose, then where’s the need to fabricate a new one? The motive here is baffling to me.
I’m not saying there isn’t something extremely odd about this SSN and how it came to be used by BHO. But a hypothesis that involves Madelyn Dunham seems to be severely lacking in common sense. If she’d already succeeded long ago in securing a “legitimate” (or legitimate-seeming) COLB, then there’s no reason to engage in felonious criminal activity by assisting her grandson in securing a fake SSN. The COLB alone would have sufficed to “prove” to SS that he was a legitimate citizen seeking a legitimate SSN etc.
