Had to be. That would be the only way Obummer could have gotten into Pakistan in in 1981. A US passport wouldn’t have gotten him in.

Between 1978 and 1987 I worked closely with a group of US citizens who ran several research projects in Pakistan. They went back and forth, free as birds, in some cases dozens and dozens of times, on their US passports.
Since this came up in birther mythology, I've looked into it more.
There has never been a time - not one single day - between 1947 and 2011 - that a US passport was not valid for travel to Pakistan. Travel by US citizens to Pakistan has never been restricted - not for one single day - by the Government of Pakistan OR by the United States.
