In HI many Filipinos whether US citizens or not have many relatives in the PI and visit back and forth. If the wife was of Filipino ancestry she might have easily gone to visit relatives as they often have large extended relatives.
Also, keep in mind, she wasn’t necessarilly indigenous to the Philippines, possibly of SPANISH ancestry.
