You hit the nail on the head.
I don't think it's the possibility that the birthers are right that scares people.
I think it's the possibility that it's not provable one way or the other (for a variety of reasons), given the available processes and circumstances, and that, left out there, it has real potential to create a third-party wave that is not large enough to get their guy elected, but large enough to assure the re-election of Barack Obama.
That is a valid worry.
Can it be addressed some other way than Ann did tonight? Yes.
Too bad about Ann. She has done her part over the years, more than any of us here. If she has gone soft, I will still appreciate all she has done in the past.
She’s only being true to form—the GOP sells us out.
American lawyers, columnists and talk show hosts do not get the difference between a "Certificate," and a "Certification" that a "certificate exists?"
An Attorney (O'Reilly, believe it or not a member of the NY Bar) keeps prattling on about Newspaper Announcements?
Every Republican Office Holder tells me "He is a NATURAL BORN CITIZEN because he was born in Hawaii?"
No court in the land will tell me what a "Natural Born Citizen" is or isn't, according to the Constitution, because I have no "standing," or haven't suffered any "damages?"
Just WTF? Over. This is mass cognitive dissonance, and sooner rather than later, it's going to jump very ugly.
But it’s not like Ann to NOT do her homework.
So, what’s up here?
She was the IT girl for conservative republicans until Palin came along. Guess she doesn’t want to play second fiddle to Palin or Bachmann.
Is that a bacon bookmark in the Book of Satan?
On April 1, 2011, the Department of State put in effect new requirements for obtaining a U.S. Passport.
Specifically, to obtain a U.S. Passport now, a person can no longer use the short-form birth certificate. Only the long-form birth certificate is accepted as primary evidence of identity.
Dept. of State New Requirements for U.S. Birth Certificate:
Updated March 23, 2011
New U.S. Birth Certificate Requirement
Beginning April 1, 2011, the U.S. Department of State will require the full names of the applicants parent(s) to be listed on all certified birth certificates to be considered as primary evidence of U.S. citizenship for all passport applicants, regardless of age. Certified birth certificates missing this information will not be acceptable as evidence of citizenship. This will not affect applications already in-process that have been submitted or accepted before the effective date.
For more information, see 22 CFR 51.42(a).
Exactly.
You have proved my point very well. This is about so much more than a birth certificate.
This is what political analysts are missing. If they think the “birther” issue would be resolved by a birth certificate, they haven’t checked the Zeitgeist lately, nor do they have a clue about the *process* meaning of the “birther” issue.

You are a sick musicman!
Any political analyst worth her salt would have figured out that what the “birther” issue really means, politically, is simply this:
Americans will NOT be told there are and are not things they are allowed to ask about their president or presidential candidate.
They intend to demonstrate that they will ask their president or presidential candidate any damn question they want, as often as they want, as long as they want, until it is answered to their satisfaction. If the way they demonstrate that is through the “birther” issue, apparently, so be it.
It is irrational for any president to spend so much treasure ( his own and taxpayer money) to hide a birth certificate. LTC Lakin sits in prison. Major Cook's career was ruined.
A **real** natural born American would be HONORED to PROMPTLY prove with the very best evidence that he was eligible to be Commander in Chief and president. He would be especially HONORED to do this for the military.
That Obama hasn't simply released these common documents is like a bur in the shoe of thinking and rational Americans who love their country. They have every reason to be highly suspicious of Obama and his origins. He is likely a usurper. All common sense points in that direction.
So if he isn’t qualified legally to be President does that mean everything he has signed is null and void? Would that make obamacare invalid?
Pray for America
Maybe she’s going through menopause. Something is happening with her, and it’s sad to watch.
“Why not at least support him in the slightest? “
Because he is wrong. Like when Trump said his grandma said he was born in Kenya. He’s repeated a falsehood; that’s wrong. It was a truncated interview quote that was (mis)used to make that bogus claim.
The full audio that debunks this is available here via this article:
http://www.salon.com/news/politics/war_room/2009/07/23/liddy
So when Donald Trump says things that are provable false, the liberal media goes into ‘neener neener’ mode to make birthers out to be liars, like this:
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2011/apr/07/donald-trump/donald-trump-says-president-obamas-grandmother-cau/
Coulter wants to keep conservatives on targets. It’s Obama’s socialism not his brithplace that is the real problem.
Regardless, what I am saying is from the point of view of someone, such as Ann, who doesn’t think there’s any there there in the “birther” issue.
She’s wrong from a political point of view, because, regardless of the merits (IOW, even if Ann is right that the issue has been debunked), the fact that the issue is not only still around, but growing in influence, has political meaning -— which is what political analysts are supposed to key in on.
