The article linked above shows that multiple sources gave his mother’s name as Shirley, before she suddenly became Stanley. The source of the original “Shirley” story is as yet unknown.
His “mother” went by S. Ann Dunham in later years. A signature “Stanley” might look like “Shirley” to someone who’s unfamiliar with the person being selected as a mother figure and if the person expects the selected one’s name to be feminine, not masculine.
How could she be “Shirley” for so long and yet there’s no “correction” to be found for this “error”, especially any statement from the son to correct the record?
