Poking around the internet is one thing, but sending for records which will just raise more questions is another. It's not about the $12 or other minimal costs.
All we have to go on with this particular bit of information seems to have originated with what appears to be a forged draft recrod that first appeared on Debbie Schlussel's blog IIRC. I don't really know who these people are or their motives. Any side could have done it or to throw everything off track. Furthermore, I don't know where these SSN's are coming from; they're supposed to be private information unless the person is deceased.
I figure if I'm meant to know something, it will come to me and what to do about it. Why don't you do it or let the big boys handle it?
