Thanks for the good info. And thanks to DABIG. IIRC DABIG lives in Hawaii. I wish he/she would get copies of some Hawaii newspaper articles.

There was NO classification for “African” (or African-American)

Just so. There is more contemporary info there also.

Parents were to self-identify from the approved codes. Still are. Prior to HI becoming a state it was a little different. Once it became a state they had to go by the US Gov. regs for vital stats. They had to use the established codes.

I read very recently that a couple in HI was suing so that they didn’t have to have any race for parents or child listed anywhere in the birth records. They got in quite a snit about it. I forget how it played out.
