How do you store sugar? I want to do it, but with the summer humidity coming soon, it will get ruined. Also, sugar (and corn and flower) attracts all kinds of bugs and mice.
What kind of containers do you use?
Thanks
I live somewhere where those things aren’t problems....most stuff is in a closet....course, over time it might BECOME a problem. And, most stuff is upstairs.
Another thought....use the old canisters (from the 40’s/50’s) and package what you have within something else...large glad-type bags....and add marshmellows...they help take up moisture - I do use marshmellows in a jar of dishwashing liquid I keep under my sink, and they work. The canisters should keep the bugs out.
Use five gallon buckets with lids, mylar bags, and oxygen absorbers. All of these things can be found here: www.beprepared.com.
Put them in plastic bags in five gallon buckets with lids, keep them in the basement. Last for years.
Plastic buckets with snap on lids work good for storage. You can usually buy them reasonably from bakeries and other food processing places- I used to get mine at a cookie factory- they are food grade. I buy laundry soap in sturdy buckets that are great for storage of non-food items.

My sugar is in its original bag which has never been a problem. I have never known a mouse or weavil with a sweet tooth,. More important is to keep it dry and avoid heat extremes.
There is a ton of information online for storing good safely and to preserve its quality.
I use canning jars for stuff I don’t want ruined. If you use the lids and screw them on snugly, then even though you are not processing the stuff, nothing can get in or out.
The only problem is that they break if dropped.
Salt is another thing to consider storing. I’d say it’s more necessary than sugar by far.
I don’t hear a lot of advice about making sure you have adequate salt, but it’s necessary for survival if someone is doing hard physical labor and sweats a lot.
I’d suggest putting the salt and anything else you want to store in containers on days with low humidity. That way, the stuff will be as dry as possible because once you seal the jar, it’s there for keeps.
SamiGirl, I go to the local supermarket bakery section. They have the five gallon food-grade buckets with tight fitting lids. They get their frostings for cakes in these types of buckets. My supermarket will sell them for one or two dollars. I just call ahead to see if they have any and they hold them for me until I get there.
I use them to store flour, sugar, rice, etc. I also have one that I use to make sauerkraut.
I use 1/2 gallon glass jars and a vacuum sealer.
Oh, and I use the Marshmellows in diswasher CRYSTALS, NOT liquid....fyi
Flour, sugar etc store well in vacuum sealed glass jars.
