In some, such as Ian Fleming, he really did know his stuff as far as spying, mixed drinks, other countries in Europe etc.
When it came to guns he was a bit ignorant but not as much as some. For instance when Major Boothroyd takes Bond’s .25 Beretta away from him he switches to a Walther PPK in 7.62 which would in fact have been a logical choice. He then makes the error of saying “it hits like a brick through a plate glass window”
When Major Boothroyd (who was a real person) saw that he had to correct Fleming again.
Interestingly, Major Boothroyd shot targets with Ian Fleming and he said Fleming was a nautral shot, a very good shot.
From one writer to another, that's all that matters.

Your books are the real deal ... interesting to me because I don’t have to suspend disbelief to believe the story lines, and don’t get jarred back to reality by an obviously wrong technical detail. The images I made in my head based on reading EFAD are still there years later. To me that is the mark of excellent writing. And technically correct examinations and extrapolations of current events are educational and useful.
