The daffy left always gets hysterical about minor despots and glorifies the really barbaric ones. Fidel Castro is a demigod to a libtard. Hugo Chavez is worthy of emulating and Friday is wear-your-Che t shirt to work day.
Jimmy Carters refusal to support the Shah and his delusions about the Ayatollah Khomeini enabled the savage fanatical regime to grab control of Iran. Khomeinis government slaughtered more citizens in its first few weeks than the Shahs regime killed during its entire thirty- eight year reign. The incendiary ayatollahs take over was a catalyst for the worldwide expansion of Islamic terrorism.
The Obama administration is running the same experiment in Egypt. Granted, Mubarak is not an ideal leader. Compared to the Muslim Brotherhood, he looks downright statesmanlike. Its the Brotherhood out there firing up the base in the streets.
The Middle East cannot tolerate any show of weakness. Worst case scenario is that a power vacuum is allowed to form which will be swiftly filled by Islamoterrorists. Just as Lebanon officially falls under the control of Hezbollah, prompting Hillary to seriously toy with the idea of cutting off their allowance.
The choice here is not betwen an oppressive and corrupt regime and some form of an open democracy. This is the reverse of the student protests in Iran. The students were opposing a brutal Islamic regime. Obama could have and certainly should have supported them.
Instead, he injected himself into all manner of extraneous issues and let the student rebellion fail after the uprising was violently suppressed.
The reality of the Middle East is that the United States has no choice but to partner up with all sorts of unsavory characters. Its how we protect ourselves. Our covert operatives get priceless intel from creatures you would never want to encounter in a dark alley. We support creepy despots because the alternative is so much worse. Mubarak, for all of his many flaws, has been able to keep Egypt from falling under the control of Islamic terrorists.
Thats worth something.
