Take the first episode of the series, for example, which features a Christian church member calling the “terrorist hotline” on the local Muslims and the new imam being arrested at the airport for a suspect phone conversation: “I thought it would be interesting to do a series about what life is like in a mosque in a small community,” the show’s creator Zarqa Nawaz told the BBC in 2007. She says the inspiration for the show came from her own experiences as a Muslim woman who moved to Canada to work in a Mosque. That has apparently produced a wealth of material. Back in 2007, CBC Director of Network Programming Kirstine Layfield defended that material and the jokes about racial profiling and terrorism to the BBC.

“It is daring in the sense that it’s bringing it out again and discussing it in kind of an honest but funny way,” she said.

But not everyone is laughing with the Muslim sitcom.

I’ve actually seen this program, and it’s pretty funny. And it’s no more propaganda than anything else on television. It even addresses serious issues in an intelligent manner, which is unique for the moving picture box.

As I’m not afraid of Moslems, I can laugh, hm?

Note that the actors are NOT muslims.
Note that ‘widely popular’ for the national broadcaster generally means an audience in the 10’s of thousands.

That gives me several ideas about funny sitcoms we could try.

How about a wacky comedy about the US born daughter on the run from her muslim father & brothers with honor killing on their mind?

Or follow the madcap exploits of a transplanted christian contract worker in Saudi Arabia as he tries to avoiding the local Mutawwa'în and keep his head?

“The show is wildly popular — enough so that it’s currently on its fifth season.”

The conclusion (wildly popular) does not necessarily follow the stated premise (fifth season).

Add these missing premises, and see what you conclude:

* the CBC is a Crown Corporation, funded by the government;
* part of the mandate of the CBC is to “reflect the multicultural and multiracial nature of Canada.”
* only commercial networks obsess over ratings — the CBC is more concerned about enlightening the masses.

I don’t know anything about this show (don’t watch the boob-tube) but I seriously doubt that there’s much ‘assimilating’ going on...

The show is wildly popular

Nonsense. If the show had a hint of popularity, the powers-that-be at the CBC would cancel it in an eyeblink.
