The results are in for the 2009 Program for International Students Assessment test of 15 year olds students from 65 different countries.
The assessment included math, science, and reading tests. So how did the the United States of America do in the results tally? Not well at all. Here is a look at our placement in the tests and a few countries that embarrassingly scored better:
Reading - 17th: Shanghai and Hong Kong, china, Belgium, Estonia, Iceland
Science - 23rd(One Point Above Average): Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Macao, China, Estonia, Liechtenstein, Slovenia, Hungary
Math - 31st (Below Average): Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Macao, China, Taiwan, Liechtenstein, Estonia, Iceland, Denmark, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Luxembourg,

Now that you've been pumped up with excitement of how your hard earned tax dollars that fund public education and the multitude of government run education initiatives are going, I'd like to share a few things with you again.
First, this little girl is going to tell you what she learned after a full year in school:

Interesting, huh? We did place best in reading so maybe that little girl is in one of the bad luck schools. Ok, fine. Let's take a look at this chart from Andrew Coulson at the Cato Institute which shows federal spending per student and test score results since 1970:
Chart
Does that chart bake your noodle? With that kind of skyrocketing expense you'd expect some results, right?
Well, the Department of Education may be getting a $4 billion funding increase in 2011. Why not, just look at the results so far! No wonder we did so poorly in math.
Yes, but how do Chinese students feel about themselves? Is their self-esteem nurtured? I mean, what is the true purpose of education after all?
Ah...but I’ll bet the USA had to include a diverse population with a strict statistical quota of all groups, including one-armed Hotentots, whereas the Asians were all Asian. If our Asians competed against their Asians, we would rank higher.
close public schools. Make teachers pay back the tax payers.
I’m not surprised at all at how horribly bad our school system’s are. I work with people who’ve never heard of Auschwitz before and these are college age people. Are children are woefully ignorant of most anything except twitter and facebook, and not enough adults care anymore to make a difference.
The Chinese results were hand picked from a Shanghai school. I would be willing to bet that rural results would have brought the average way down.
Of course the reverse is true in the US. If you throw out the results from the lowest 20-30 failing urban school districts, the marks go way up.
This is no revelation. The urban US school districts are absolute cesspools run by cleptocrats.
How do the private school and home schooled American kids fair?
Frankly, over half of the public schools are now more than baby sitting warehouses for parental dolts who care less about their kids education than they do their next shoe purchase.
Make unions illegal and fire teachers that don’t care and won’t teach. There are plenty of good teachers out there, most are not allowed to do their jobs.
Everybody knows that the test is “culturally biased”.
In China, going to school is not a “white thang”.
Here are a couple of points:
1. Federal spending on education is a waste of time and money. Education is run at the local level and that is where you need the money.
2. Canada has relatively good scores across the board and they have as diverse and urban a population as we do. What do they do that we don’t?
That would be an interesting study to read. We know private and home schooled kids do far better than public schools.
Chicoms got no DOE.
In other News, A Wayne County Circuit Court judge has ruled in favor of the Detroit School Board, finding that emergency financial manager Robert Bobb overstepped the bounds of his authority by trying to control the academic plans for Detroit Public Schools along with financial matters....
Do you the the judge even knows how to use the internet to find out about the Shanghai results? She is probably just part of the old Kwami/Coleman Young structure.
(He is appealing the ruling... where is Superman?)
To be honest many if not most private schools cherry pick the better students...and they can decline a student for various reasons so their stat's are higher.
The public schools have to take anyone..good or bad. Smart or dumb.
I'm not familiar with home schoolers system but I expect there is some areas where you cannot compare them to public schools as well..kids who the parents have a problem with go back to the public school.
Are there teacher’s unions in China? Is China over run by illegal immigrants that can’t speak Chinese?
Fail. (Were you looking for the verb fare?)
I won't leave FR for some blog just to see an embedded video.
