My father was a sleazy drunk, and my mother suffered from depression. Knowledge is power, and with hindsight about my upbringing, and observing my much-older siblings' lives, I ended up damaged but not dangerous, a little sad but not insanely so, very conservative but not controlling, sober but not a teetotaler.

My parents sent me to shrinks to find out why I “wasn’t like them”.
The shrinks’ unanimous and collective opinion was that ~I~ was not the family member[s] who should be seeing a shrink.
Somehow, I managed to escape the ancestral loony bin relatively unscathed.
[personally, I attribute that to spending *far* more time with my dogs and horses than my family]
