The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and SS Reichsfuhrer Heinrich Himmler recruited two Waffen SS Mountain Divisions (44,000 men) for action on the Eastern Front — primarily to fight in Yugoslavia against the partisans there.

The 13th Waffen SS Gebrigs Division “Handschar” (Sword) was composed of Croatian and Bosnian Muslims.

The 21st Waffen SS Gebrigs Division “Skanderbeg” was composed of Albanians.

Both the 13th and 21st Mountain Divisions were under the commands of German SS officers. Attrocities committed by the Muslim units were said to turn the stomachs of even hardened SS officers. Both division were effectively disbanded or destroyed in late 1944 and early 1945.
