Nanny State Republican Upton Wants House Energy Committee Chair?

Light bulb banning Republican Fred Upton (R, Mich) is angling to become the new GOP chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee as the House begins to look to adjusting to reflect the Republican’s tidal wave election. Upton is a perfect example of the sort of representative that the new GOP congress needs to think about very carefully before elevating them to higher positions.

Upton has the seniority to take the position, it is true, but his past nanny state-styled votes for banning the light bulb in favor of CFLs makes his bid troubling taking into consideration the conservative direction voters went on November 2 -- and Upton didn't just vote for the bill, he co-sponsored it with the left leaning Dem. Jane Harmon of California.

Upton's voting record is quite a mixed bag where it concerns proving his conservative credentials. Along with the nanny-state light bulb ban vote, Upton also voted against extending the Bush tax cuts, he was in favor of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), as well as the first stimulus bill...

The GOP better be VERY careful who they put up in leadership roles. This is no time to give RINOs a spot just because "it's their turn."

Was discussed yesterday. I hope this RINO doesn’t get the spot.

Give Upton the chairmanship of the Congressional Committee on Historical Monuments and Plaques or the Committee on Maintenance and Repairs at Federal Museums.

What's to think very carefully about? NFW!

Those of us old enough to shave remember how the RINOs in the Senate undercut the Class of '94 House Republicans every way they could beginning with their assertion that the Contract With America did not pertain to them through Al D'Amato's half-hearted Banking Committee hearings on Whitewater (Gee Senator Pothole, what's in your FBI file?), and on to Chester Lott's immortal words to Henry Hyde, "Henry, you're not going this garbage on us," that signaled how the RINOs had no intention of anything but a sham impeachment trial. Of course, the final kick in the tuckus was that worthless POS Spector (RINO-Glasgow) voting Not Proven that prevented even a majority of finding Clinton guilty.

So again, NFW should a RINO get near a chairmanship no matter how much seniority he has.

I agree with you. These guys in Washington better be VERY careful of where they go from here. We won’t just let them do whatever they want any more.
