I’m sure they profit somehow by adding new programs, else they wouldn’t bother.

New cookbooks, and also it keeps members interested and attending meetings.
Sally decided to try finding common denominators by adding the original denominators together. Sigh.

Ah, yes. New math.
Today I’m going to buy flannel shirts and another blanket.

What happens when she tries to boot it? How far before it hangs, or displays error messages, or whatever?

I think I’m going to order a complete set of Key To Fractions.

Pull the plug. Plug it back in again.
Either that, or press and hold the power button for a slow 10 count.
As long as it was only a software issue, it should come back up ok. If MS wants to check the file system prior to logging in, have it do so.

She gets a black and white text screen, dialogue for “safe mode,” does a time, and then returns to dialogue for safe mode.

Once it's off, have her turn it back on again and see what happens...
If something occurred to let the Magic Smoke out, the above suggestion won't have much effect.

If she knows how to get the cover off, she could try to blow the (standard, non-mutant) dust bunnies out and see if it just over heated.
Is it beeping at all? Any fans going? Drives spinning up? Anything on the monitor?

Morning. It’s a cold one here, snow and below-freezing temps. Sunny though.

Where are you? It is 11F right now for us.
To: sionnsar
Cool-ish, raining, snow down below 3,000ft, I-80 closed over Donner — looking like a very promising snow season up on top of the Sierra. Thanksgiving Day expecting clear skies but no temps topping the mid-50’s.

Seriously, though...
These guys here appear to be working on some really interesting technology we could tap into to get the castle resupplied from low Earth orbit.
A couple of tidbits from their web page:
Our goal is to deliver propellant to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) at less than 10% of the current cost. By using hydrogen gas gun launchers we will attain costs of $500/lb at the pump in LEO
Our solution blends a Jules Verne/Robert Heinlein concept of gun launch to space with 21st century hydrogen gas gun technology.

Jumping in the middle of this, so may have been covered already.
I just had the same problem with company laptop. It was a bad hard drive. She should be able to interrupt the initial boot process and run diagnosis to determine such.

Thanks. She says the hard drive was used when she got it two years ago, and it now appears to be totally dead-o.
It’s tiresome being dependent on technology with such a short useful life!

You might also take a look at stuff from Teaching Textbooks. The combined audio/visual presentation, coupled with the keyboard/mouse input interface engages more of the human senses which makes the material connect more readily with every child’s learning style.
Son #2, in particular, was highly resistant to the read/write format of traditional workbook-type curricula, but absolutely took off once we set him up with the Teaching Textbooks Math program.
Check it out at their website, http://teachingtextbooks.com/ , but look through eBay and check with your local homeschool community to see about buying it used.
