Some Toxins with Your Popcorn?
The Daily Green ^ | 7/30/2008 | Annie Bell Muzaurieta

. . .

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a synthetic chemical with various uses, most commonly found in nonstick surfaces (think Teflon pans and packaging for microwavable foods like popcorn and pizza), and in breathable, all-weather clothing, such as Gore-Tex.

. . .

He says studies show that PFOA is present in 98 percent of Americans' blood and 100 percent of newborns. It doesn't break down and thus accumulates in the system over time.

First, the assertion “It doesn’t break down and thus accumulates in the system over time,” is a non-sequitur. One needs additional hypothesis that a substance is not excreted (at a rate equal to or greater than the rate at which it is absorbed or ingested) to conclude that it “accumulates in the system over time.”

Of course that doesn’t decrease the effectiveness of the piece as an anti-Coons hit-piece to divert “greens” to a minor party candidate—”greens” aren’t exactly known for their logical or scientific rigor. As someone else suggested, wade into the swamp and post this over at DU, and maybe in Delaware discussion threads at the Daily Kos and the HuffPo, where there are folks backing Coons who could be swayed.

I decided microwave popcorn is toxic anyway and went back to popping my own. It leaves a slime in your mouth, and the inside of the bag is coated with nasty stuff...

I knew it. Next they'll want to tap the blood of 98% of all Americans. Probably a new IRS Task Force.

>>I honestly had to use PAM to stop the sticking after a few initial uses.<<

That doesn’t make sense. I have been cooking with cast iron since the ‘60s. Nothing sticks. It’s a quick rinse under running water and back on the hot burner to completely dry with high heat. Once the cast iron is seasoned right it’s the best!

As long as you use your cast iron pans for frying only you won’t have a problem with them. I have a Griswold that I bought over fifty years ago and it is fantastic. Never cook anything with tomatoes and don’t simmer anything in water, fry only, and the finish gets better and better.

You washed them with soap, didn't you.

A good philosophy doesn’t require going to a complete natural diet, but rather cutting down on fast food, soda, beer and preprepared junk.

Cast iron is the only thing I use to make spaghetti sauce.

Horrible wording there.

I have a 25 year old 12" cast iron skillet that. It's as "non-stick" as any teflon skillet, and nearly indestructible. I have several other, younger cast irons skillets and a sheet-steel wok in similar condition.

I honestly had to use PAM to stop the sticking after a few initial uses.

Of course ... a small amount of oil or fat absorbed into the surface is what makes it non-stick. It should never be "squeaky clean". Soap is completely destructive to the surface.

It strips all the finish off and you have to re do it don’t you, it leaves the pan open to rust. The non stick finish is just burned on grease anyway and easy to put back on. I have enamel pans that I use for spaghetti sauce and stew.

Nope. Just ban the poison PFOA.

No more Gore-tex.

No more man made chemical poisons in my blood, thank you.

And send the millionaire poisoner Chris Coons back to his dad.

At least seafood can be an honorable profession. It certainly is in Maine. A lot of decent hardworking Americans work in the seafood industry.

WL Gore makes profits from poisoning people.

Right. This is a potential wedge issue. It’s not that effective here, because we’re pro Christine, or we should be 100%.

This is also a line of attack that Christine herself may not want to use because the chemical industry is a large employer in Delaware.

But, this is definitely something that Democrat environmentalists in Delaware should know. If nothing else, it is likely to dampen their enthusiasm for Coons.

I have never posted at DU and I don’t really want to. I also don’t know what the Delaware environmentalist message board is.

Also, another thing to consider is that I’m not really targeting Democrats. I’m targeting Robert W. Gore and his cronies who probably didn’t bargain on a long discussion about PFOA poison when they decided that Coons should represent the chemical industry in Delaware.

I’ve never gone there - DU Huff post, etc.

The science is confusing no doubt. Incomplete. Lots of different ways to look at the same data. Etc.

I don’t want any PFOA in my system at all, even if I can’t prove that it is causing any specific harm at all. And Chris Coons step dad, Robert W. Gore, the guy who paid for his Amherst and Yale degrees, is making billions from putting this toxin in our blood.

One goal is to make Chris Coons a liability to the chemical companies - to his step dad.

Actually, you sound a bit overwrought.

Do me a favour. Please describe the differences between fluorides (which I understand you think are relatively benign), and PFOA (which you think is Chris Coons’ attempt to murder you personally), with a good rundown on the differences in relative lethality.

Since I take it you’re already stuffed to the gills with PFOA, I expect you to keel over at any moment, or display other bizarre effects.

Nope, just saying that fluorides aren’t man made.

I’ve got some PFOA in my body, and I have no idea how it got there and I know that PFOA does not exist in nature.

I would like no PFOAs in my body. I don’t want Chris Coons to be able to use my body as his own personal science lab / profit making machine.

That’s all.

I don’t want it in my body. Chris Coons hasn’t figured out how to keep it out of my body, and until he does, Gore-tex and PFOA should be banned.

Pretty simple. I don’t have to prove anything that you think.

Keep your poisons out of my body, thanks.

Right oh.

No idea how it got there.

Most everyone has it in them.

Crazy stuff I know.

Maybe Chris Coons can’t personally stop it. His step dad could in a second, or at least his step dad could stop using PFOA to make Gore-tex, or stop making Gore-tex.

What is clear is that Coons has made millions by poisoning Americans. Actually, that’s an oversimplification. In the process of making millions, Coons poisons Americans. I’m not trying to imply that Coons is getting paid millions TO poison Americans (although read some John Holdren sometime), but he is making millions, and in the process, he’s poisoning Americans.

I’m not saying that Chris Coons is the only person poisoning Americans with PFOA. There are other companies other than WL Gore who poison Americans with PFOA. DuPont shares a larger responsibility, no doubt.
