I guess he has to have all those people in back to make it look like he is not just an empty suit. Makes me think of Saddam when he gathered his hostages next to him for news confrences.

No, he’s not going for the English-as-a-second-language accent, he’s trying to go for the “I’m really just a cool, well-spoken black guy that may or may not be from the South” thing. Part Southern Baptist preacher, part community organizer.
